BriHyNergy inaugurated 1GW PEM electrolyser assembling line
(Shenzhen, Guangdong) On Nov 7th, BriHyNergy inaugurated its1GW PEM electrolyser manufacturing facility in Shenzhen and released new 200Nm3/hr PEM electrolyser product, which dramatically improves the company’s PEM manufacturing capability.
BriHyNergy (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., established in November 2021, is a high-tech enterprise focusing on the localization and industrialization of key materials and components for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis equipment for hydrogen production. Currently, BriHyNergy could supply 40-micron, 80-100-micron enhanced proton exchange membranes (PEM) and membrane electrode assembly (MEA); high-performance and long-life PEM electrolysis stacks, and PEM electrolysers.
China plays host to many alkaline electrolyser manufacturers that are able to undercut Western competitors on price, but the local industry is lagging behind on the newer and more expensive PEM technology — which many green hydrogen developers favour as it is said to have superior performance when powered by the variable output from wind and solar farms.
However, China’s PEM electrolyser market is shifting dramatically, both from demand side and supply side. According to our resources, as of October, domestic procurements for PEM electrolyser have reached 76MW, increasing sharply from 2022.
From supply side, the gigafactory, jointly built by Cummins and Sinopec in Guangdong, started commercial operation from July 2023 which is dedicated to manufacturing of PEM electrolyser. This factory initially has 500MW capacity and will expand to 1GW by 2028. The joint venture has not revealed the identity of its customers for the first batch of electrolysers, but Sinopec is likely to be a major offtaker of the machines. The oil refiner has already laid out plans to become a green hydrogen superpower, targeting two million tonnes of production by 2025.
Shandong SAIKESAISI Hydrogen Energy, another leading PEM electrolyser innovator in China which established in 2007, announced it raise several hundred million Rmb in July. The fund will be used to expand PEM electrolyser manufacturing capacity.
Now many industry analysts expect the PEM electrolyser market may boom from 2023 stimulated by renewable hydrogen production. Some demonstration project showed that PEM+ALK may have the advantage of both quick response time and low Capex.
