China speeding up green hydrogen production investment
Several colossal green hydrogen production projects have been announced since the beginning of 2023 in China. Most of these green hydrogen plants will be located at Inner Mongolia where rich solar and wind power resource could be deployed to produce green hydrogen. The green hydrogen can be used to replace gray hydrogen in local chemical complex.
The location of Inner Mongolia
Green hydrogen production need mass investment, while it seemed not to be a problem for China’s energy and chemical giants. Just have a glance at those projects announced in last two months.
Baotou Damao 1800 per day green hydrogen-ammonia, total investment 12 bn Rmb ($1.76 bn), commercial operation is due by 2025;
Inner Mongolia Xingan 15 renewable power-green hydrogen-green ammonia integration projects, total investment 49.5 bn Rmb ($7.28);
Ningxia Baofeng 100,000 ton annually green ammonia project;
Inner Mongolia Alshaa 140,000 ton green ammonia project;
Liaoning Taian 56000 ton green hydrogen project;
The Renewable Energy Association estimated that Inner Mongolia government has given permissions to 31 green hydrogen production projects as of Jan 2023. Totally, these projects will have 531,890 ton green hydrogen production capacity, associated with 13.15GW new solar and wind power.
