First green hydrogen certificate in China
(Chongli, Hebei) Hebei Jointo Energy Investment Co.,Ltd. received the first green hydrogen certificate in China on March 28th, according to local industry news. The certificate was jointly issued by Bureau Veritas & China Hydrogen Alliance.
The green hydrogen was issued to Jointo Energy’s renewable hydrogen production plant located at Chongli, Hebei province in accordance to “Standard and evaluation of low-carbon hydrogen, clean hydrogen, and renewable hydrogen” issued by China Hydrogen Alliance in Dec 2020.
Unlike EU and US, China’s central government hasn’t issued a national standard for “low-carbon hydrogen”, “clean hydrogen”, or “renewable hydrogen”, so this standard is the most authoritative standard available in China. Based on this standard, the threshold level of carbon emission intensity is 14.51 kgCO2e/kgH2 for low-carbon hydrogen and 4.9 kgCO2e/kgH2 for clean hydrogen and renewable hydrogen.
This Standard is largely in line with Europe’s Green Hydrogen Certification project. It gives a thorough analysis to China’s hydrogen supply situation based on in-depth research of hydrogen production projects of companies such as China Energy, and innovatively puts forward a diagram that integrates with international standards in terms of methodology and clean hydrogen indicators while fully taking into account China’s actual situation.
A reliable certification scheme for renewable hydrogen could support the growing renewables sector and accelerating the energy transition. It is a result of demands from both hydrogen producers and off-takers for comprehensive standards adapted to the fast-expanding global hydrogen market. It provides transparency to foster investment in hydrogen production and commercialization, paving the way to reach a global consensus concerning hydrogen standards and compliance.
