Hong Kong to replace its 70% Citybus fleet with FCEVs
Citybus, a public transportation operator in Hong Kong, announced the maiden cross-harbour trip of Hong Kong's first hydrogen double deck bus on Route 170 was completed on Sunday, July 14. This milestone achievement coincided with Citybus’ 45th anniversary and the recent release of the Government’s “Strategy of Hydrogen Development in Hong Kong”.
The hydrogen double deck bus operates on Route 170, which is the only franchised bus route in Hong Kong that traverse the city’s three toll tunnels - Aberdeen Tunnel, Cross-Harbour Tunnel, and Lion Rock Tunnel. The route also holds historical significance for Citybus’network expansion as one of the first franchised bus routes that Citybus launched in the 1990s through our "Network 26" initiative. Back then, Citybus was the first to offer full air conditioning on this route, and now it’s providing customers with an even more tranquil, comfortable, and zero-emission bus experience with the hydrogen bus.
The hydrogen double deck bus has demonstrated stable and excellent performance during its initial deployment on three Kowloon routes, including Route 20 Waterloo Road Line, Route 22M, and Route 20A Nathan Road Line, starting from since February 2024.
The fuel cell system of the bus is manufactured by Ballard Power, while the hydrogen storage and supply system come from CIMC Hexagon Purus Co., Ltd., a joint venture of CIMC and Hexagon Purus. The bus is produced by Wisdom (Fujian) Motor Company Limited, a Zero-Emission Commercial Vehicles producer located in Fujian province, China, according to another local report.
Citybus is fully dedicated to supporting Hong Kong’s carbon neutrality target through our zero-emission campaign #MissionZero, pledging to operate a full-fleet of zero-emission buses by 2045.
